Owner’s cabin
The largest bed on board, and the one the rest of the cabin is planned around.
An owner's cabin is usually the only bedroom on a yacht that gets the full beam, the long window and the time to be planned properly. That freedom is exactly why the bed has to be decided early: everything else in the room is positioned against it.
What this cabin asks
The questions that decide this bed
-
01
The window line
The owner's cabin normally has the best view on board, and the bed is what that view is seen from. Where the mattress top sits against the glass decides whether the horizon is visible lying down or only sitting up.
-
02
Room to walk around
Full beam does not automatically mean clearance. The route around the bed, the swing of wardrobe doors and the space to make it up in a seaway all take from the same width the mattress wants.
-
03
Movement at sea
An owner's cabin is often used while the yacht is underway, not only at anchor. How the bed is fixed, and how the bedding stays put, matters more here than in a cabin used alongside.
-
04
The designer's scheme
This room usually sets the tone for the interior. The bed is the largest single piece in it, so it needs to belong to the scheme rather than sit inside it.
Useful to have
None of this is needed to start a conversation. If you already know any of it, it saves a round of questions.
- The general arrangement drawing for the deck the cabin sits on
- The berth size you have now, and what is left around it
- The height of the window sill above the sole
- Whether the base is built into the joinery or stands free
- The interior designer's scheme, if one exists
